MOUNDS VIEW POLICE OFFICERS RECEIVE LIFE SAVING AWARD FROM THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION

On 3-5-04 Mounds View Police Officers Kirk Leitch and Darrell Meyer received the 2004 Heartsaver Award from the American Heart Association at the Emergency Medical Services conference held at the Northland Inn for their life saving efforts of January 18, 2003.  On this date, Officer Kirk Leitch conducted a routine walk-through of the Mermaid sports bar in Mounds View. Employees of the Mermaid alerted Officer Kirk Leitch to a young employee who had collapsed.  The 22-year-old male quickly deteriorated into a full cardiac arrest.  With the assistance of Officer Darrell Meyer, Officer Leitch attached an automated external defibrillator (AED) to the young man, who was shocked and given CPR, until paramedics transported him.  Information from the defibrillator was later downloaded and used to diagnose and repair a heart condition the victim apparently had since birth.  He made full recovery.  His survival is a direct result of quick thinking rapid response and the availability of an AED.
